Spring has fully sprung along central Florida’s coast. The last of the cold fronts is behind us and the years warm weather patterns are starting to shape up. It won’t be long now before our summer species like tarpon and big jacks are here off Daytona and New Smyrna Beach and ready to target.
Currently, we are in the final portion of Cobia season, with the last opportunities at fish occurring likely over this coming week or so. Big redfish are beginning their summer patterns and providing some exciting fishing for both spin and fly anglers. This can be one of the most fun times of year to target our resident bull reds! This coming week should bring more consistent spring patterns and steady, stable warm weather as we push through spring and into summer. One last cold front this past weekend should be the end of the cool weather this season.
Big reds have been the most available fish with some nice ones caught this past week in the Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach area. The bite from these fish is only going to improve as our weather patterns get more stable and warmer. Some of Mosquito Lagoon remains clear and the sight fishing has been pretty good for back country reds. Cobia season may be winding down as the fish migrate further to the north past Daytona Beach and out of our reach in the coming weeks, but hopefully we will get a few more opportunities this week! Capt. Billy Rotne Ponce Inlet Fishing Charters As we have passed the first day of spring for 2021, the season is falling into place and the fishing and weather patterns are really awesome this time of year. No more cold days and soon our favorite warm water species like Tarpon will be back in the area and giving us opportunities.
Cobia fishing off the Daytona Beach and Mosquito Lagoon coast has been late to arrive this year but we are getting some fish and having fun doing it. Our bull redfish are feeding well and their spring and early summer patterns are shaping up just as planned. We have caught some spectacular fish this past week including one fish that was almost 50lbs. Black drum fishing is winding down but we are still getting a few really nice fish here at the end of the season. It’s only a matter of time before the tarpon show up, and with the bull redfish already doing their thing, now is a great time to fish central Florida! Capt. Billy Rotne Ponce Inlet Fishing Charters Weather seemingly can’t get much better than it’s been this past week in the Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach area. Spring is definitely arriving and the fishing will be getting better and better as it does.
Cobia are late this year with water temperatures still a bit too cold, but it almost certainly can’t be more than a week or so before they arrive. It won’t be long before these fish are swimming along the beaches from Mosquito Lagoon to Daytona Beach. March cobia days are almost all filled with a couple days left but I still have some days left in early April. Big black drum and bull reds have been the focus for the past week with some giant drum up to 60+ pounds being caught. These giant fish will be here for a few more weeks before beginning their migration back north to Pamlico Sound and Chesapeake Bay. Big reds will remain and will only get more active as the next few weeks come. With only a couple weeks to go before spring, things are going great for fishing. We are already experiencing great temperatures and fishing in the Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach areas of central Florida.
Cobia fishing should be happening within a week or two at most, we just need a little calm weather and a slight increase in ocean temperatures off the Mosquito Lagoon through Daytona Beach area. That’s going to happen very soon and when it does, it won’t last long. Cobia fishing is very popular and I only have a few possible dates left open so give me a shout if you’re looking to get out during this opportunity. Big bull redfish and drum have been a steady option for us over the last couple weeks with every trip being successful in landing some very large fish. The fishing for the redfish will only get more active as we enter warmer months. The black drum fishing is nearing its seasonal end as the fish begin migrating north with spring starting. Capt. Billy Rotne Ponce Inlet Fishing Charters It sure feels like spring is here with the great weather we have been having. Mild days with temperatures in the upper 70’s have been the trend lately in the New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet area, making for some really comfortable days on the water.
Cobia are almost here and we should be able to target them later this week and over the rest of March from offshore of Mosquito Lagoon all the way up to Daytona Beach. Now is the time if these fish are what you’re looking for. Big bull redfish and big black drum have been keeping us catching inshore, with every trip over the last few weeks producing some great fish. The fishing for reds will only get better each day as the temperatures continue to get warmer. Capt. Billy Rotne Ponce Inlet Fishing Charters With the recent unseasonably warm temperatures that Florida is experiencing despite winter storms elsewhere, it’s seemingly likely that the coldest part of winter has passed here and we will be entering an early spring here in the Ponce Inlet, New Smyrna Beach and greater Daytona Beach areas.
This brings with it new opportunities at migratory species like cobia, followed by tarpon over the next few months. These fishing options are very popular as they can be a lot of fun. Sight fishing a big cobia of the back of a couple thousand pound manta ray is quite the experience! Aside from the oncoming migratory fish, our year round fishery of bull redfish as well as seasonal black drum has been good the last few weeks. We have been landing quality fish on every trip with most days giving us large fish of both species. Capt. Billy Rotne Ponce Inlet Fishing Charters As we are now halfway through our winter season, spring is on the horizon and the time has come to start looking ahead at what fishing opportunities are not only happening now but will soon be available.
Currently, we are still catching big bull reds around Ponce Inlet, New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The year round resident fish are truly the basis of our fishery here and offer something special that no other place has, an opportunity to catch a trophy redfish on any day of the year. We have also been catching 4-8lb redfish in shallow water and large migratory black drum in the 20-30lb class will be here through February and March. Looking ahead, we will soon have opportunities nearshore off Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach for migratory cobia. These fish are highly coveted for the exciting style of sight fishing used to target them, catching them off the backs of giant manta rays. When the temperatures start to warm up, the fish will arrive. It all depends on cold fronts and the intensity of the rest of the winter season through February, but one way or another it won’t be long now! Capt. Billy Rotne Ponce Inlet Fishing Charters The past week has been a roller coaster ride of temperatures from lows in the 30’s to highs in the 80’s. Winter in Florida is never predictable!
We have still been catching some big bull redfish in 20-35lb class in the Daytona Beach, Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach area. This fish are impervious to the cold weather that impact so many other Florida species and are a staple during the winter months. There are also some big 20-30lb migratory black drum around the Mosquito Lagoon area here for the winter from their Chesapeake Bay summer grounds. These fish are always fun to catch and can appear in huge schools in both deeper water and on the flats where they can tail and offer sight fishing opportunities. Capt. Billy Rotne Ponce Inlet Fishing Charters Our first batch of truly cool temperatures in the New Smyrna, Ponce Inlet and Daytona Beach areas arrived over Christmas with night time lows approaching 35 degrees. This dramatically changed our seasonal patterns and we are now in the full winter pattern. That being said, we have forecast temperatures back in the low 80’s in the next couple days. So goes winter in Florida.
Migratory Black Drum have arrived and some of the fish we catch can be true giants. Last week my 14 year old client Drew landed a 70lb fish, the largest I have ever seen. These fish provide some sight fishing opportunities, even tailing on calmer mornings and evenings. Opportunities for both spin and fly anglers make these fish a winter time staple in and around Mosquito Lagoon. Big bull redfish are year round targets here and we are still catching these fish into winter, landing some really large fish this past week as well. Capt. Billy Rotne Ponce Inlet Fishing Charters |
