June fishing continues to be great! Despite some cloudy and rainy days, June is shaping up to be an amazing fishing month in Mosquito Lagoon and Ponce Inlet. We have landed a couple dozen huge reds this past week alone with some tarpon and sea trout.
Big bull redfish have been the main focus of our inshore trips and have been really spectacular recently. These fish can challenge anyone from the skilled fly fisherman to the novice angler. The highlight of this past week was a couple of these fish on fly and also twin 11 year olds from Pennsylvania landing two 30lb fish each like they were pros! Tarpon have been fun when nearshore conditions allow access but we have also been catching tarpon inshore around New Smyrna Beach as well. These fish never get old and whether they’re 10lbs or 100lbs they are just thrilling to catch. Water clarity in Mosquito Lagoon is the best it’s been in many years and the sight fishing has been good on sunny days. Weather patterns should stabilize as we head into our mid summer lull before Hurricane season kicks off, allowing both great nearshore and flats sight fishing days. Capt. Great June fishing! June is turning out to be a great month for fishing so far in the Ponce Inlet area. Opportunities for many different species are becoming a daily occurrence. As these first tropical systems have now passed by, we will hopefully enter the summer time lull with great weather nearly every morning and most afternoons through July.
Tarpon have been showing up nearshore in good numbers and we have hooked and boated some giants this week. Most of the clients had never hooked into a fish like a 100lb tarpon so it really made for some great days! We have also been hooking some drag screaming 6’ long 100lb sharks along with the tarpon. Big bull reds have remained consistent with multiple trophy fish on nearly every charter. These fish are just the right combination of power and fight length to allow anyone to catch an awesome fish without the full on battle of catching a 100lb+ tarpon. Back country and flats fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon and Ponce Inlet area has continued to be productive but our primary focus has been on the larger fish that have been giving us opportunities this past week. I’ll be spending some time fly fishing the back country later this coming week. Capt. Billy Rotne Ponce Inlet Fishing Charters The weather patterns have begun to shape up into the standard Florida summer weather, with beautiful mornings and chances of showers in the afternoon. These calm mornings will start to allow some of the best nearshore fishing of the year that takes place during the summer months.
Tarpon are arriving and have started their normal feeding cycles in the channels and inlet, and will be on the nearshore food sources very soon. Giant jacks and drag screaming false albacore tuna are also around on most days we fish off the beach, with the random chance of a manta ray with cobia. Inshore fishing remains great for big bull redfish. We have caught some really impressive fish this week including a 50” 40lb fish that we managed on a 10lb test setup, along with several other really nice fish. Back country fishing is transitional right now with very high water adding a layer of difficulty to sight fishing, but that should level out within the next week or so as the fish begin to move into the most shallow portions of the back country to access new feeding areas that were previously off limits.
