This past week has been challenging weather wise with the start of our rainy season and a couple tropical waves which subsequently turned into land falling tropical systems in the Carolinas, but the fishing has remained good. We have been catching a lot of fish in both the bay boat and the skiffs.
In the bay boat we have been catching a lot of big bull reds on almost every trip. The bite should remain strong through June. Tarpon have also showed up and we have been hooking a few on both bait and fly. The back country fishing has been good for redfish and trout with fly and spin tackle, recent rains increased the water height and will have the fish hunting shallow in the far reaches of the back country very soon and should make for some great sight fishing! Late May fishing continues to be awesome!
As we enter the later stage of May, the fishing continues to be great in Ponce Inlet, New Smyrna, and Mosquito Lagoon. Lots of big bull redfish, fun sight fishing in the back country for 4-8lb class redfish and sea trout, and some snook around as well. Tarpon are here and starting to stage in their feeding areas. Early June should provide calmer seas and good beach fishing for these large tarpon. Giant 20-30lb jack crevalle and blitzing false albacore tuna are also making nearshore fishing a lot of fun on light tackle. We had some great days fly fishing for redfish, trout and snook in Mosquito Lagoon, and also caught some big bull redfish and nearshore species in the bay boat. Great weather earlier this past week have us some excellent sight fishing and allowed us to catch a bunch of great fish, including some first redfish on fly! Nearshore and in the inlet channels we caught some huge redfish and had a blast with thousands of 5-8lb false albacore blitzing all around us. A true tuna, they are a great target for light fly and spin tackle. Tarpon should start arriving any time now with this warmer weather, this looks like it will be an especially productive year for tarpon due to the warmer than usual start to the season.
